After signing a  confidentiality agreement, I was told that it was to be called the \u201cEgo  Booster\u201d and what that meant.<\/p>\n<p>Then \u2013 because of a postal worker strike north of the border \u2013 my test  unit sat in a Canadian post office for an interminable time.  Eventually, Brian gave up on that and UPS\u2019d another unit to me. [And  that took its own sweet time getting here:  Vancouver-Seattle-Louisville-Nashville-Atlanta-Deerfield  Beach-my  home.]<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t receive it until a few days prior to its announcement this  past weekend. Fortunately, other beta testers had already identified the  couple <em>minor<\/em> bugs that I found (and which have been <em>corrected<\/em> in the final product now being sold). I also now have the final (flawless) version, upon which this review is based.<\/p>\n<p>So, I didn\u2019t pay for it \u2026 but not for the purpose this review, which  Brian never requested. I\u2019m reviewing it simply because I\u2019m bursting with  enthusiasm about it.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Ego Booster<\/strong> is now available for purchase from Canadian supplier, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.happyvaper.com\/The_Ego_Booster_p\/egobooster.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Happy Vaper<\/a><\/strong>. [I guess Canadians have to stick together, eh?<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Wink\" src=\"http:\/\/www.e-cigarette-forum.com\/forum\/images\/smilies\/bluewinky.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/>] Fortunately, Happy Jack does sell to Yanks like me and other non-Canadians.<\/p>\n<p>[NOTE: All photos of the Ego Booster used in this review are courtesy  of Artisan Vaping or Happy Vaper. [Artisan Vaping\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.e-cigarette-forum.com\/forum\/happyvaper\/202635-ego-booster-faq.html\" target=\"_blank\">FAQ<\/a> might help with that.] I <em>can<\/em> tell you <strong>what<\/strong> it does: the Ego Booster attaches seamlessly to the Joye eGo (any mAh  and including the eGo-T and Passthrough) and boosts its voltage from the  eGo\u2019s native 3.2V up to as high as <strong>4.7V<\/strong> (or anywhere in between) \u2013 thereby turning the eGo into the world\u2019s first <strong>variable voltage fat batt!<\/strong> Wow!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"assembling the eGo\/Booster\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/assemblingtheeGo-Booster.jpg\" alt=\"assembling the eGo\/Booster\" width=\"435\" height=\"86\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You simply screw it onto the eGo as if it were an atomizer and then  screw your atomizer or cartomizer and eGo cone onto the Ego Booster (as  if it were the eGo battery). Fully assembled, the eGo\/Booster unit (when  using the 650 mAh battery) is roughly penstyle length.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"assembled eGo\/Booster\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/assembledeGo-Booster.jpg\" alt=\"assembled eGo\/Booster\" width=\"425\" height=\"53\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the two preceding photos, the Ego Booster is exactly  the same diameter and has the same rubberized coating and stainless  steel fittings and trim as the black eGo. It is 49mm long, but adds only  43mm (about 1\u00bd inches) to the overall length of the device, just a bit  longer than the 1000 mAh eGo\/Tornado.<\/p>\n<p>Operating the Ego Booster is simplicity itself: Turn the dial <em>counter<\/em>clockwise  to increase the voltage; clockwise to decrease it. So the direction is  counter-intuitive, but no big deal to adapt to. And the dial turns <em>smoothly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"turn the dial counterclockwise\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/turnthedialcounterclockwise.jpg\" alt=\"turn the dial counterclockwise\" width=\"168\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to Brian\u2019s partner, John Pinkney, \u201cAt the midpoint of the  adjustment (where the Artisan Vaping logo on the knob is aligned with  the axis of the eGo) the output is 4.0 +\/-.1 volts.\u201d When turned all the  way clockwise, it is ~3.3V \u2026 and fully counterclockwise, ~4.7V. So, the  unit in the photo above is set at about 4.2V.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"adjusting the voltage\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/adjustingthevoltage.jpg\" alt=\"adjusting the voltage\" width=\"393\" height=\"338\" \/><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">[\u201cPot stop\u201d (whatever that means) is not to be confused with the <strong>pit<\/strong> stop shown in an earlier photo.]<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Other than adjusting the voltage, you operate your modified eGo as always \u2013 by pushing the button on the eGo portion \u2026 <strong>not<\/strong> by trying to push the Booster\u2019s dial. The current price is <strong>CAD$60<\/strong> ($75 minus $15 \u201cinstant rebate\u201d).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"color: navy;\">What It <\/span><em><span style=\"color: green;\">Works With<\/span><\/em> <span style=\"color: navy;\">\u2026 and Does <\/span><em><span style=\"color: red;\">Not<\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"atomizers that work with the Booster\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/atomizersthatworkwiththeBooster.jpg\" alt=\"atomizers that work with the Booster\" width=\"402\" height=\"318\" \/><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Based on Artisan Vaping claims <strong>and<\/strong> confirmed by my experience, the Ego Booster works (and works well) with <em>any<\/em> <strong>atomizer <\/strong>and <strong>cartomizer<\/strong> that can be used with the eGo \u2013 even those requiring an adapter. I have  used it successfully with eGo-T tank attys, various 510 atomizers and  cartomizers (including the Dual Coil), 901 atomizers, Echo and Echo-e  cartomizers, <acronym title=\"KR808D-1\">Kr8<\/acronym> cartos, 801 cartos,  and with my beloved 801 atomizer. The atomizer\/cone fittings are  identical to the eGo\u2019s, so eGo-specific attys and cartos \u2013 and the eGo  cone \u2013 fit seamlessly.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"cartomizers that work with the Booster\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/cartomizersthatworkwiththeBooster.jpg\" alt=\"cartomizers that work with the Booster\" width=\"354\" height=\"326\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p>It even works with <strong>LR<\/strong> attys and cartos, although there may be little to be gained by it \u2026 <em>except<\/em> that I have found it effective (at the lowest setting) in cutting <em>back<\/em> the intensity of LR cartos that were hitting too hard for me on the  unmodified eGo. Also, I have enjoyed exploring the capabilities of the  amazing Smok Tech Dual Coil cartomizer, which performs so well at many  different voltages.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So what <strong>batteries<\/strong> does it work with? Well \u2026 the Ego Booster is a precisely named device: it connects and works perfectly with all manual <strong>Joye eGos<\/strong> (<em>aka<\/em> \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.happyvaper.com\/Happy_eGo_E_cigarette_Starter_Kit_p\/ego-kit.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Happy eGos<\/a>,\u201d  if you get them from Happy Vaper or \u201cTornados\u201d from Totally Wicked) \u2013  regardless of mAh and including the eGo-T and eGo Passthrough \u2013 <strong>period!<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"eGo batteries the Booster WILL work with\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/eGobatteriestheBoosterWILLworkwith-1.jpg\" alt=\"eGo batteries the Booster WILL work with\" width=\"311\" height=\"424\" \/><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It does <strong>not<\/strong> work with <em>automatic<\/em> batteries <strong>or<\/strong> with most <em>other<\/em> fat batts (e.g., the Riva, VGO, and my KGO) even if it fits just fine. I  understand that this is because of the superior MOSFET \u2013 and 3.<strong>2<\/strong>V \u2013 of the Joye eGo.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"fat batts the Booster will NOT work with\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/fatbattstheBoosterwillNOTworkwith.jpg\" alt=\"fat batts the Booster will NOT work with\" width=\"471\" height=\"288\" \/><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">[Thumbs down does <strong>not<\/strong> mean that these are bad PVs.]<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<p>It <em>also<\/em> <strong>does<\/strong> work with some <strong>mods<\/strong> \u2013 those that use  very high mAh (e.g., 18650) and\/or IMR (high-drain) batteries. Of  course, they probably will need a 510-to-510 extension adapter to fit.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"mod batteries the Booster WILL work with\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/modbatteriestheBoosterWILLworkwith.jpg\" alt=\"mod batteries the Booster WILL work with\" width=\"387\" height=\"329\" \/><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It does look a bit <em>weird<\/em> \u2013 and <strong>big<\/strong> \u2013 sitting on an extension adapter on top of my 18650 NoEgo.<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Laugh\" src=\"http:\/\/www.e-cigarette-forum.com\/forum\/images\/smilies\/laugh.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/> I\u2019m having fun vaping it, however. I\u2019ve never used the GooseNeck; I expect that it is a similar experience.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Ego Booster on NoEgo\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/EgoBoosteronNoEgo.jpg\" alt=\"Ego Booster on NoEgo\" width=\"417\" height=\"348\" \/><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">But this use with mods is a <strong>bonus<\/strong> \u2013 the Ego Booster was intended from the get-go as an <strong>eGo<\/strong> accessory. [Who knows \u2026 <em>maybe<\/em> there will be an Omni version in the future.]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>Assessment<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"color: green;\">Positives<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<li>First      and foremost, the glaringly obvious one: When merged with the eGo, this is      <strong>the world\u2019s first variable voltage fat batt<\/strong> \u2026 and all that that      enables.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"variable voltage fat batt\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/variablevoltagefatbatt.jpg\" alt=\"variable voltage fat batt\" width=\"355\" height=\"471\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul>\n<li>I had <em>assumed<\/em> that boosting the eGo\u2019s voltage would  cut its effective mAh significantly.      However, John states: \u201cEven  when used at its maximum setting (4.7 volts),      the Ego Booster  should <strong><em>not<\/em> reduce the time between charges<\/strong> of your  battery by more than 25%.\u201d And I have not noticed more frequent       charging as I have used the Booster on my 650 mAh batts. [Yes, I do  regard      this only slight reduction in mAh as a positive.]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Its <strong>quality,      fit and finish<\/strong>. I was shocked  by the professional look and feel of      this thing. It ain\u2019t no  homebrew mod. Instead it looks \u2013 and performs \u2013 as      if it came from  Joyetech itself. [And it is delivered in a beautiful,      sturdy  felt-lined case. Some of the VV mods      (e.g., Little Sister) are shorter, but none are 14mm in diameter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"color: red;\">Negatives<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>price<\/strong>:      Although the Ego Booster certainly is <em>worth<\/em> 60 bucks, that price      tag puts it into more of a niche market. I  imagine that those considering      variable voltage mods will jump on  it \u2026 and they should. But this is not a      \u201cbudget\u201d item; I doubt  whether it will attract the <em>average<\/em> vaper,      e.g., those vaping $30 Rivas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The      net <strong>size<\/strong> of the assembled eGo\/Booster unit. Yes, it is slender, but      it is <em>long<\/em>. As a penstyle man, this is not a turnoff to <em>me<\/em> \u2026      but it may very well be to many vapers. I\u2019ve ordered a 1000 mAh eGo battery      to try out with it: that will be <em>really<\/em> long.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Ego Booster attached to eGo-T\" src=\"http:\/\/i562.photobucket.com\/albums\/ss67\/DonDaBoomVape\/Ego%20Booster%20review\/EgoBoosterattachedtoeGo.jpg\" alt=\"Ego Booster attached to eGo-T\" width=\"432\" height=\"82\" \/><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">[Yes, the same photo used under Positives is used again here under Negatives.]<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<ul>\n<li>As an <strong>add-on      accessory<\/strong>, the total look and feel of  the eGo\/Booster is as integrated      as it possibly could be, but it is  not quite as elegant as a one-piece VV      battery would be. Also the  position of the switch button is lower than      optimum.<span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong> <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: navy;\"><strong>My <em>Personal<\/em> Evaluation<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p>I have come to <strong>respect<\/strong> the Ego Booster enormously for all the reasons previously stated.
